Clinton County, Missouri

Clinton County is a county located in the U.S. State of Missouri. As of 2000, the population is 18,979. Its name is in honor of the seventh Governor of New York State, DeWitt Clinton. Its county seat is Plattsburg6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,097 km² (423 mi²). 1,085 km² (419 mi²) of it is land and 12 km² (5 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.11% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 18,979 people, 7,152 households, and 5,299 families residing in the county. The population density is 18/km² (45/mi²). There are 7,877 housing units at an average density of 7/km² (19/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 96.58% White, 1.52% African American, 0.34% Native American, 0.17% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.27% from other races, and 1.12% from two or more races. 1.08% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 7,152 households out of which 34.90% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.40% are married couples living together, 8.80% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.90% are non-families. 22.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.50% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.59 and the average family size is 3.03.

In the county the population is spread out with 26.80% under the age of 18, 7.40% from 18 to 24, 28.20% from 25 to 44, 23.50% from 45 to 64, and 14.10% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 96.00 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.60 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $41,629, and the median income for a family is $48,244. Males have a median income of $36,307 versus $22,991 for females. The per capita income for the county is $19,056. 9.30% of the population and 7.30% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 11.30% are under the age of 18 and 12.70% are 65 or older.
