Clemson is a city located in South Carolina. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 11,939.

Geography Clemson is located at 34°41'6" North, 82°48'53" West (34.684930, -82.814777)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 20.2 km² (7.8 mi²). 19.1 km² (7.4 mi²) of it is land and 1.1 km² (0.4 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 5.39% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 11,939 people, 5,061 households, and 2,196 families residing in the city. The population density is 625.5/km² (1,620.6/mi²). There are 5,679 housing units at an average density of 297.5/km² (770.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 80.98% White, 11.38% African American, 0.11% Native American, 5.73% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.73% from other races, and 1.05% from two or more races. 1.82% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 5,061 households out of which 17.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 35.2% are married couples living together, 5.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 56.6% are non-families. 28.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.30 and the average family size is 2.84.

In the city the population is spread out with 14.5% under the age of 18, 36.8% from 18 to 24, 20.4% from 25 to 44, 15.5% from 45 to 64, and 12.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 25 years. For every 100 females there are 106.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 107.5 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $26,892, and the median income for a family is $61,176. Males have a median income of $39,318 versus $28,663 for females. The per capita income for the city is $19,272. 33.1% of the population and 8.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 13.1% are under the age of 18 and 8.4% are 65 or older.
