Cleburne County, Arkansas

Cleburne County is a county located in the U.S. state of Arkansas. As of 2000, the population is 24,046. The county seat is Heber Springs.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,533 km² (592 mi²). 1,432 km² (553 mi²) of it is land and 101 km² (39 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 6.57% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 24,046 people, 10,190 households, and 7,408 families residing in the county. The population density is 17/km² (44/mi²). There are 13,732 housing units at an average density of 10/km² (25/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 98.20% White, 0.12% African American, 0.47% Native American, 0.15% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.15% from other races, and 0.89% from two or more races. 1.17% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 10,190 households out of which 26.30% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.70% are married couples living together, 7.90% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.30% are non-families. 24.40% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.33 and the average family size is 2.74.

In the county the population is spread out with 21.30% under the age of 18, 6.60% from 18 to 24, 24.10% from 25 to 44, 26.90% from 45 to 64, and 21.10% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 44 years. For every 100 females there are 93.90 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.50 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $31,531, and the median income for a family is $37,273. Males have a median income of $28,844 versus $19,672 for females. The per capita income for the county is $17,250. 13.10% of the population and 9.00% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 17.10% are under the age of 18 and 11.90% are 65 or older.
