Cleburne County, Alabama

Cleburne County is a county of the State of Alabama. Its name is in honor of Major General Patrick Cleburne, of Arkansas. As of 2000 the population was 14,123. Its county seat is Heflin.

History Cleburne County was established on December 6, 1866.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,453 km² (561 mi²). 1,451 km² (560 mi²) of it is land and 2 km² (1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.14% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 14,123 people, 5,590 households, and 4,125 families residing in the county. The population density is 10/km² (25/mi²). There are 6,189 housing units at an average density of 4/km² (11/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 94.74% White, 3.70% African American, 0.30% Native American, 0.14% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.34% from other races, and 0.77% from two or more races. 1.40% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 5,590 households out of which 32.80% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.40% are married couples living together, 8.70% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.20% are non-families. 23.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.51 and the average family size is 2.95.

In the county the population is spread out with 24.30% under the age of 18, 8.20% from 18 to 24, 28.50% from 25 to 44, 25.30% from 45 to 64, and 13.70% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 99.30 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 96.40 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $30,820, and the median income for a family is $35,579. Males have a median income of $29,752 versus $18,840 for females. The per capita income for the county is $14,762. 13.90% of the population and 10.90% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 16.10% are under the age of 18 and 20.10% are 65 or older.
