Clayton County, Georgia

Clayton County is a county located in the U.S. State of Georgia. As of 2000, the population is 236,517. The county's county seat is Jonesboro, Georgia6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 374 km² (144 mi²). 369 km² (143 mi²) of it is land and 4 km² (2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.15% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 236,517 people, 82,243 households, and 59,214 families residing in the county. The population density is 640/km² (1,658/mi²). There are 86,461 housing units at an average density of 234/km² (606/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 37.94% White, 51.55% African American, 0.32% Native American, 4.49% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 3.55% from other races, and 2.08% from two or more races. 7.50% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 82,243 households out of which 40.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.70% are married couples living together, 20.30% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.00% are non-families. 21.80% of all households are made up of individuals and 3.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.84 and the average family size is 3.30.

In the county the population is spread out with 30.00% under the age of 18, 10.40% from 18 to 24, 35.40% from 25 to 44, 18.40% from 45 to 64, and 5.90% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 30 years. For every 100 females there are 94.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.90 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $42,697, and the median income for a family is $46,782. Males have a median income of $32,118 versus $26,926 for females. The per capita income for the county is $18,079. 10.10% of the population and 8.20% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 13.20% are under the age of 18 and 8.90% are 65 or older.
