Clarke County, Alabama

Clarke County is a county of the State of Alabama. Its name is in honor of General John Clarke of Georgia. As of 2000 the population was 27,867. Its county seat is Grove Hill.

History Clarke County was established on December 10, 1812.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 3,244 km² (1,253 mi²). 3,207 km² (1,238 mi²) of it is land and 37 km² (14 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.13% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 27,867 people, 10,578 households, and 7,700 families residing in the county. The population density is 9/km² (22/mi²). There are 12,631 housing units at an average density of 4/km² (10/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 55.94% White, 43.02% African American, 0.22% Native American, 0.16% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.16% from other races, and 0.49% from two or more races. 0.65% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 10,578 households out of which 35.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.90% are married couples living together, 15.70% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.20% are non-families. 25.50% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.90% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.60 and the average family size is 3.13.

In the county the population is spread out with 28.00% under the age of 18, 8.50% from 18 to 24, 27.50% from 25 to 44, 22.50% from 45 to 64, and 13.50% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 89.70 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 84.60 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $27,388, and the median income for a family is $34,546. Males have a median income of $34,111 versus $19,075 for females. The per capita income for the county is $14,581. 22.60% of the population and 18.10% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 29.60% are under the age of 18 and 23.80% are 65 or older.
