History Citrus County was created in 1887. It was named for the county's citrus trees and the citrus industry.
Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,002 km² (773 mi²). 1,512 km² (584 mi²) of it is land and 490 km² (189 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 24.49% water.
Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 118,085 people, 52,634 households, and 36,317 families residing in the county. The population density is 78/km² (202/mi²). There are 62,204 housing units at an average density of 41/km² (106/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 95.05% White, 2.36% African American, 0.36% Native American, 0.76% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.37% from other races, and 1.07% from two or more races. 2.66% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 52,634 households out of which 19.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.30% are married couples living together, 7.60% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.00% are non-families. 26.10% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.20 and the average family size is 2.60.
In the county the population is spread out with 17.20% under the age of 18, 4.60% from 18 to 24, 19.10% from 25 to 44, 26.90% from 45 to 64, and 32.20% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 53 years. For every 100 females there are 92.30 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.60 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $31,001, and the median income for a family is $36,711. Males have a median income of $28,091 versus $21,408 for females. The per capita income for the county is $18,585. 11.70% of the population and 8.50% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 18.10% are under the age of 18 and 7.00% are 65 or older.
