Chickasaw County, Mississippi

Chickasaw County is a county located in the U.S. State of Mississippi. As of 2000, the population is 19,440. Its county seats are Houston and Okolona6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,306 km² (504 mi²). 1,299 km² (502 mi²) of it is land and 7 km² (3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.54% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 19,440 people, 7,253 households, and 5,287 families residing in the county. The population density is 15/km² (39/mi²). There are 7,981 housing units at an average density of 6/km² (16/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 56.89% White, 41.26% African American, 0.19% Native American, 0.17% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.99% from other races, and 0.46% from two or more races. 2.29% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 7,253 households out of which 36.30% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.80% are married couples living together, 18.00% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.10% are non-families. 24.90% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.90% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.65 and the average family size is 3.17.

In the county the population is spread out with 28.60% under the age of 18, 9.30% from 18 to 24, 27.60% from 25 to 44, 21.00% from 45 to 64, and 13.50% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 92.60 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.40 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $26,364, and the median income for a family is $33,819. Males have a median income of $25,459 versus $20,099 for females. The per capita income for the county is $13,279. 20.00% of the population and 16.80% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 23.90% are under the age of 18 and 22.40% are 65 or older.
