Cherokee County, Oklahoma

Cherokee County is a county located in the U.S. State of Oklahoma. As of 2000, the population is 42,521. Its county seat is Tahlequah6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,011 km² (776 mi²). 1,945 km² (751 mi²) of it is land and 66 km² (25 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.27% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 42,521 people, 16,175 households, and 11,079 families residing in the county. The population density is 22/km² (57/mi²). There are 19,499 housing units at an average density of 10/km² (26/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 56.41% White, 1.20% African American, 32.42% Native American, 0.27% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 2.10% from other races, and 7.56% from two or more races. 4.14% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 16,175 households out of which 32.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.50% are married couples living together, 11.90% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.50% are non-families. 25.30% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.00% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.52 and the average family size is 3.04.

In the county, the population is spread out with 26.30% under the age of 18, 14.60% from 18 to 24, 25.70% from 25 to 44, 21.50% from 45 to 64, and 12.00% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 32 years. For every 100 females there are 96.30 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.10 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $26,536, and the median income for a family is $32,369. Males have a median income of $25,993 versus $21,048 for females. The per capita income for the county is $13,436. 22.90% of the population and 17.00% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 28.40% are under the age of 18 and 13.80% are 65 or older.
