Centre, Alabama

Centre is a city located in Cherokee County, Alabama. As of the 2000 census, the population of the city is 3,216. The city is the county seat of Cherokee County.

Geography Centre is located at 34°9'33.052" North, 85°40'29.071" West (34.159181, -85.674742).

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 28.7 km² (11.1 mi²). 28.4 km² (11.0 mi²) of it is land and 0.3 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.99% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 3,216 people, 1,324 households, and 877 families residing in the city. The population density is 113.2/km² (293.2/mi²). There are 1,515 housing units at an average density of 53.3/km² (138.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 87.90% White, 10.01% African American, 0.37% Native American, 0.12% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.31% from other races, and 1.27% from two or more races. 0.96% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,324 households out of which 24.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.3% are married couples living together, 13.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.7% are non-families. 32.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 19.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.24 and the average family size is 2.81.

In the city the population is spread out with 19.5% under the age of 18, 8.1% from 18 to 24, 24.0% from 25 to 44, 23.9% from 45 to 64, and 24.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 44 years. For every 100 females there are 81.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 76.9 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $24,000, and the median income for a family is $35,250. Males have a median income of $31,636 versus $22,035 for females. The per capita income for the city is $14,997. 26.1% of the population and 18.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 38.6% are under the age of 18 and 21.5% are 65 or older.
