Catron County, New Mexico

Catron County is a county located in the U.S. State of New Mexico. As of 2000, the population is 3,543. Its county seat is Reserve6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 17,946 km² (6,929 mi²). 17,943 km² (6,928 mi²) of it is land and 3 km² (1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.02% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 3,543 people, 1,584 households, and 1,040 families residing in the county. The population density is 0/km² (0/mi²). There are 2,548 housing units at an average density of 0/km² (0/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 87.75% White, 0.28% African American, 2.20% Native American, 0.68% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 5.42% from other races, and 3.61% from two or more races. 19.16% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,584 households out of which 22.30% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.40% are married couples living together, 7.60% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.30% are non-families. 30.10% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.23 and the average family size is 2.75.

In the county the population is spread out with 21.10% under the age of 18, 4.20% from 18 to 24, 19.50% from 25 to 44, 36.40% from 45 to 64, and 18.80% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 48 years. For every 100 females there are 104.70 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 101.70 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $23,892, and the median income for a family is $30,742. Males have a median income of $26,064 versus $18,315 for females. The per capita income for the county is $13,951. 24.50% of the population and 17.40% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 39.60% are under the age of 18 and 14.90% are 65 or older.
