Catahoula Parish, Louisiana

Catahoula Parish is a parish located in the U.S. State of Louisiana. As of 2000, the population is 10,920.

Geography The parish has a total area of 1,915 km2 (739 mi2). 1,822 km2 (704 mi2) of it is land and 93 km2 (36 mi2) of it is water. The total area is 4.84% water.

Demographics As of 2000, there are 10,920 people, 4,082 households, and 2,992 families residing in the parish. The population density is 6/km2 (16/mi2). There are 5,351 housing units at an average density of 3 persons/km2 (8 persons/mi2). The racial makeup of the parish is 71.78% White, 27.12% African American, 0.19% Native American, 0.13% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.19% from other races, and 0.59% from two or more races. 0.92% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 4,082 households out of which 32.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.70% are married couples living together, 14.50% have a woman whose husband does not live with her, and 26.70% are non-families. 24.30% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.55 and the average family size is 3.02.

In the parish the population is spread out with 25.80% under the age of 18, 10.00% from 18 to 24, 26.80% from 25 to 44, 23.00% from 45 to 64, and 14.40% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 100.60 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 98.00 males.

The median income for a household in the parish is $22,528, and the median income for a family is $27,206. Males have a median income of $26,181 versus $18,427 for females. The per capita income for the parish is $12,608. 28.10% of the population and 22.60% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 41.80% are under the age of 18 and 20.10% are 65 or older.
