On April 23, 2000, the town of Castor was hit by a tornado with a ½-mile-wide path in the late evening, which caused massive damage. Notably there were no injuries; however, the infrastructure damage caused by the tornado and the heavy rains following caused many business and public buildings to be closed for an extended period.
Geography Castor is located at 32°15'10" North, 93°9'54" West (32.252757, -93.164933)1.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 3.1 km² (1.2 mi²). 3.1 km² (1.2 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.
Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 209 people, 88 households, and 52 families residing in the village. The population density is 67.2/km² (174.6/mi²). There are 101 housing units at an average density of 32.5/km² (84.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 85.17% White, 11.96% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 2.87% from other races, and 0.00% from two or more races. 3.83% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 88 households out of which 30.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.6% are married couples living together, 10.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 39.8% are non-families. 38.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 23.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.38 and the average family size is 3.25.
In the village the population is spread out with 30.1% under the age of 18, 5.3% from 18 to 24, 30.1% from 25 to 44, 14.8% from 45 to 64, and 19.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village is $23,125, and the median income for a family is $35,000. Males have a median income of $23,750 versus $35,833 for females. The per capita income for the village is $11,963. 20.3% of the population and 17.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 20.8% are under the age of 18 and 15.7% are 65 or older.
