Cass County, Iowa

Cass County is a county located in the U.S. State of Iowa. As of 2000, the population is 14,684. Its county seat is Atlantic, Iowa6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,463 km² (565 mi²). 1,462 km² (564 mi²) of it is land and 2 km² (1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.12% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 14,684 people, 6,120 households, and 4,094 families residing in the county. The population density is 10/km² (26/mi²). There are 6,590 housing units at an average density of 5/km² (12/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 98.84% White, 0.21% African American, 0.12% Native American, 0.14% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.31% from other races, and 0.34% from two or more races. 0.69% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 6,120 households out of which 29.30% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.60% are married couples living together, 7.20% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.10% are non-families. 29.80% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.90% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.32 and the average family size is 2.87.

In the county the population is spread out with 23.80% under the age of 18, 6.80% from 18 to 24, 24.80% from 25 to 44, 23.80% from 45 to 64, and 20.80% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 94.30 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.20 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $32,922, and the median income for a family is $40,564. Males have a median income of $29,736 versus $20,108 for females. The per capita income for the county is $17,067. 11.10% of the population and 7.20% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 14.40% are under the age of 18 and 10.10% are 65 or older.
