Cartagena, Colombia

Cartagena, Colombia is a large seaport on the north coast of Colombia. It was a major center of early Spanish settlement in the Americas. It is a walled city with a large sheltered bay. In Spanish times it was defended by a massive stone fort, San Filipe[?]. Cartagena boasted a palace of the inquisition and a Jesuit college. St. Peter Claver patron saint of the slaves worked in and from the Jesuit college.

Cartagena is named for Cartagena, Spain and also called "Cartagena de Indias".
