Carrizo Springs is a city located in Dimmit County, Texas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 5,655. It is the county seat of Dimmit County6.

Geography Carrizo Springs is located at 28°31'36" North, 99°51'45" West (28.526699, -99.862423)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.1 km² (3.1 mi²). 8.1 km² (3.1 mi²) of it is land and 0.32% is water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 5,655 people, 1,816 households, and 1,450 families residing in the city. The population density is 699.8/km² (1,812.9/mi²). There are 2,109 housing units at an average density of 261.0/km² (676.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 75.28% White, 1.34% African American, 0.69% Native American, 1.10% Asian, 0.12% Pacific Islander, 18.83% from other races, and 2.63% from two or more races. 87.21% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,816 households out of which 43.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.0% are married couples living together, 20.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 20.1% are non-families. 17.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.06 and the average family size is 3.47.

In the city the population is spread out with 33.3% under the age of 18, 9.7% from 18 to 24, 25.0% from 25 to 44, 18.8% from 45 to 64, and 13.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 31 years. For every 100 females there are 91.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 88.3 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $21,306, and the median income for a family is $22,375. Males have a median income of $24,536 versus $15,000 for females. The per capita income for the city is $8,642. 33.8% of the population and 30.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 42.9% are under the age of 18 and 29.9% are 65 or older.
