Carlton County is a county located in the U.S. State of Minnesota. As of 2000, the population is 31,671. Its county seat is Carlton6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,267 km² (875 mi²). 2,228 km² (860 mi²) of it is land and 39 km² (15 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.70% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 31,671 people, 12,064 households, and 8,408 families residing in the county. The population density is 14/km² (37/mi²). There are 13,721 housing units at an average density of 6/km² (16/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 91.75% White, 0.97% African American, 5.19% Native American, 0.35% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.21% from other races, and 1.52% from two or more races. 0.84% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 12,064 households out of which 32.60% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.50% are married couples living together, 9.00% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.30% are non-families. 26.10% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.00% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.50 and the average family size is 3.00.

In the county the population is spread out with 25.40% under the age of 18, 7.70% from 18 to 24, 28.40% from 25 to 44, 23.50% from 45 to 64, and 15.10% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 102.70 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 102.20 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $40,021, and the median income for a family is $48,406. Males have a median income of $38,788 versus $25,555 for females. The per capita income for the county is $18,073. 7.90% of the population and 5.40% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 8.20% are under the age of 18 and 9.30% are 65 or older.
