Carinthia (German Kärnten) was a duchy of the Holy Roman Empire until its dissolution in 1806, and a crownland of Austria-Hungary until it dissolved in 1918.
Following the Carinthian Plebiscite on October 20, 1920, the former duchy was divided into an Austrian part, and a part belongning to the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes, today in Slovenia. The Austrian Carinthia is a federal state of Austria, while the Slovene Carinthia is an informal province.
