Carbon County, Pennsylvania

Carbon County is a county located in the U.S. State of Pennsylvania. As of 2000, the population is 58,802. Its county seat is Jim Thorpe6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,003 km² (387 mi²). 987 km² (381 mi²) of it is land and 16 km² (6 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.60% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 58,802 people, 23,701 households, and 16,424 families residing in the county. The population density is 60/km² (154/mi²). There are 30,492 housing units at an average density of 31/km² (80/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 97.82% White, 0.60% African American, 0.16% Native American, 0.31% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.32% from other races, and 0.76% from two or more races. 1.46% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 23,701 households out of which 28.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.80% are married couples living together, 9.90% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.70% are non-families. 26.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.50% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.44 and the average family size is 2.93.

In the county, the population is spread out with 22.20% under the age of 18, 6.90% from 18 to 24, 28.30% from 25 to 44, 24.20% from 45 to 64, and 18.50% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 94.90 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.30 males.
