Cameron County, Texas

Cameron County is a county located in the U.S. State of Texas. As of 2000, the population is 335,227. Its county seat is Brownsville6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 3,306 km² (1,276 mi²). 2,346 km² (906 mi²) of it is land and 960 km² (371 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 29.03% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 335,227 people, 97,267 households, and 79,953 families residing in the county. The population density is 143/km² (370/mi²). There are 119,654 housing units at an average density of 51/km² (132/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 80.29% White, 0.48% African American, 0.44% Native American, 0.48% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 15.98% from other races, and 2.30% from two or more races. 84.34% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 97,267 households out of which 45.80% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.80% are married couples living together, 17.40% have a female householder with no husband present, and 17.80% are non-families. 15.40% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.40 and the average family size is 3.81.

In the county, the population is spread out with 33.80% under the age of 18, 10.50% from 18 to 24, 26.80% from 25 to 44, 17.80% from 45 to 64, and 11.10% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 29 years. For every 100 females there are 91.90 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 86.30 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $26,155, and the median income for a family is $27,853. Males have a median income of $22,755 versus $18,182 for females. The per capita income for the county is $10,960. 33.10% of the population and 28.20% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 43.10% are under the age of 18 and 22.90% are 65 or older.
