Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,032 km² (399 mi²). 1,029 km² (397 mi²) of it is land and 4 km² (1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.36% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 5,974 people, 2,465 households, and 1,624 families residing in the county. The population density is 6/km² (15/mi²). There are 4,592 housing units at an average density of 4/km² (12/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 98.83% White, 0.35% African American, 0.13% Native American, 0.12% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.05% from other races, and 0.47% from two or more races. 0.57% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,465 households out of which 27.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.40% are married couples living together, 9.20% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.10% are non-families. 30.10% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older.
