Camberwell, London, England

Camberwell is a place in London, England in the London Borough of Southwark.

The Camberwell area is a mixture of relatively affluent housing, combined with poorer communities living in cheaper housing such as tower blocks. The ethnic mix includes a large proportion of black people, especially those of Caribbean and Nigerian descent, as well as a number of immigrants of middle eastern origin.

The crossroads at the centre of Camberwell is the site of Camberwell Green, a very small area of common land. Unfortunately, on the green it is impossible to ignore the nearby passing traffic.

The area is popular with students, due to the Camberwell college of Art on Peckham Road, and this accounts for the large number of relaxed yet fashionable bars in the area. The Snug Bar (Camberwell Road) is good for cocktails and serves a roast lunch on Sundays. The house DJ plays old-skool reggae and a jazz band performs most Sunday nights. The Redstar, on the green, caters for a younger crowd and is often packed with people dancing to eighties / nineties pop on Firday and Saturday nights. Thosae people who prefer a more traditional pub should head for the Hermit's cave, at the corner of Grove Lane, although this, too gets very crowded at weekends.
