Calverton, New York

Calverton is a town located in Suffolk County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 5,704.

Geography Calverton is located at 40°55'14" North, 72°44'11" West (40.920535, -72.736285)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 73.9 km² (28.5 mi²). 72.5 km² (28.0 mi²) of it is land and 1.3 km² (0.5 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.82% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 5,704 people, 2,539 households, and 1,518 families residing in the town. The population density is 78.7/km² (203.7/mi²). There are 2,735 housing units at an average density of 37.7/km² (97.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 86.61% White, 7.66% African American, 0.46% Native American, 0.95% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 2.03% from other races, and 2.26% from two or more races. 6.07% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,539 households out of which 22.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.1% are married couples living together, 10.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 40.2% are non-families. 34.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 19.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.24 and the average family size is 2.88.

In the town the population is spread out with 20.3% under the age of 18, 5.6% from 18 to 24, 27.5% from 25 to 44, 20.9% from 45 to 64, and 25.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 43 years. For every 100 females there are 93.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 88.0 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $36,544, and the median income for a family is $44,342. Males have a median income of $40,184 versus $33,047 for females. The per capita income for the town is $26,609. 10.2% of the population and 6.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 13.1% are under the age of 18 and 6.6% are 65 or older.
