Calloway County, Kentucky

Calloway County is a county located in the U.S. State of Kentucky. As of 2000, the population is 34,177. Its county seat is Murray, Kentucky6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,064 km² (411 mi²). 1,000 km² (386 mi²) of it is land and 64 km² (25 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 5.97% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 34,177 people, 13,862 households, and 8,594 families residing in the county. The population density is 34/km² (88/mi²). There are 16,069 housing units at an average density of 16/km² (42/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 93.48% White, 3.56% African American, 0.20% Native American, 1.33% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.46% from other races, and 0.93% from two or more races. 1.38% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 13,862 households out of which 25.80% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.00% are married couples living together, 8.10% have a female householder with no husband present, and 38.00% are non-families. 29.70% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.25 and the average family size is 2.79.

In the county the population is spread out with 18.70% under the age of 18, 19.80% from 18 to 24, 24.60% from 25 to 44, 21.90% from 45 to 64, and 15.00% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 93.20 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.00 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $30,134, and the median income for a family is $39,914. Males have a median income of $31,184 versus $22,046 for females. The per capita income for the county is $16,566. 16.60% of the population and 9.80% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 17.70% are under the age of 18 and 10.00% are 65 or older.
