Caldwell County is a county located in the U.S. State of Texas. As of 2000, the population is 32,194. Its county seat is Lockhart6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,418 km² (547 mi²). 1,413 km² (546 mi²) of it is land and 4 km² (2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.31% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 32,194 people, 10,816 households, and 8,079 families residing in the county. The population density is 23/km² (59/mi²). There are 11,901 housing units at an average density of 8/km² (22/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 70.13% White, 8.50% African American, 0.61% Native American, 0.34% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 17.66% from other races, and 2.74% from two or more races. 40.44% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 10,816 households out of which 37.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.00% are married couples living together, 13.30% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.30% are non-families. 21.20% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.82 and the average family size is 3.28.

In the county, the population is spread out with 28.30% under the age of 18, 8.50% from 18 to 24, 29.80% from 25 to 44, 20.80% from 45 to 64, and 12.50% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 97.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.70 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $36,573, and the median income for a family is $41,300. Males have a median income of $29,295 versus $21,595 for females. The per capita income for the county is $15,099. 13.10% of the population and 10.40% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 15.10% are under the age of 18 and 15.40% are 65 or older.
