Cairo, Ohio

Cairo is a village located in Allen County, Ohio at the intersection of Ohio Route 65 and the Lincoln Highway. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 499.

Geography Cairo is located at 40°49'53" North, 84°5'4" West (40.831355, -84.084501)1. It is about 6 miles south of the city of Lima, Ohio, 6 miles south of Columbus Grove, Ohio, 5 miles east of the village of Gomer, Ohio and 6 miles west of the village of Beaverdam, Ohio. The Baltimore & Ohio Railroad runs through Cairo in a North and South direction about one half mile east of Route 65. The Detroit, Toledo and Ironton Railroad used to run through town paralleling the Baltimore & Ohio about 300' to the East. The DT&I Railroad was removed in the 1970s. The most distinctive feature of Cairo is a concrete grain elevator about 150' tall.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.6 km² (0.2 mi²). 0.6 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 499 people, 181 households, and 148 families residing in the village. The population density is 802.8/km² (2,064.0/mi²). There are 184 housing units at an average density of 296.0/km² (761.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 98.60% White, 0.40% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.20% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.80% from two or more races. 0.80% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 181 households out of which 40.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 65.2% are married couples living together, 12.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 18.2% are non-families. 15.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.76 and the average family size is 3.08.

In the village the population is spread out with 30.7% under the age of 18, 6.8% from 18 to 24, 31.5% from 25 to 44, 21.4% from 45 to 64, and 9.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 92.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.1 males.

The median income for a household in the village is $32,917, and the median income for a family is $39,375. Males have a median income of $34,250 versus $25,313 for females. The per capita income for the village is $14,365. 6.9% of the population and 6.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 11.4% are under the age of 18 and 3.8% are 65 or older.
