Burke County is a county located in the U.S. State of Georgia. As of 2000, the population is 22,243. The county's county seat is Waynesboro, Georgia6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,163 km² (835 mi²). 2,151 km² (830 mi²) of it is land and 12 km² (5 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.54% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 22,243 people, 7,934 households, and 5,799 families residing in the county. The population density is 10/km² (27/mi²). There are 8,842 housing units at an average density of 4/km² (11/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 46.90% White, 51.00% African American, 0.23% Native American, 0.26% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.63% from other races, and 0.97% from two or more races. 1.42% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 7,934 households out of which 38.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.40% are married couples living together, 22.80% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.90% are non-families. 23.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.50% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.77 and the average family size is 3.27.

In the county the population is spread out with 31.30% under the age of 18, 9.10% from 18 to 24, 27.30% from 25 to 44, 21.40% from 45 to 64, and 10.90% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 33 years. For every 100 females there are 90.30 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 84.60 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $27,877, and the median income for a family is $31,660. Males have a median income of $29,992 versus $19,008 for females. The per capita income for the county is $13,136. 28.70% of the population and 23.80% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 39.00% are under the age of 18 and 29.80% are 65 or older.
