Bullock County, Alabama

Bullock County, Alabama is a county of the State of Alabama. Its name is in honor of Colonel Edward C. Bullock. As of 2000 the population was 11,714. Its county seat is Union Springs.

History Bullock County was established on December 5, 1866.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,621 km² (626 mi²). 1,619 km² (625 mi²) of it is land and 3 km² (1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.17% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 11,714 people, 3,986 households, and 2,730 families residing in the county. The population density is 7/km² (19/mi²). There are 4,727 housing units at an average density of 3/km² (8/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 25.25% White, 73.11% African American, 0.38% Native American, 0.18% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.37% from other races, and 0.70% from two or more races. 2.75% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 3,986 households out of which 33.50% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 35.50% are married couples living together, 28.20% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.50% are non-families. 28.90% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.56 and the average family size is 3.13.

In the county the population is spread out with 26.10% under the age of 18, 10.30% from 18 to 24, 29.30% from 25 to 44, 21.20% from 45 to 64, and 13.20% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 110.20 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 113.40 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $20,605, and the median income for a family is $23,990. Males have a median income of $22,560 versus $19,069 for females. The per capita income for the county is $10,163. 33.50% of the population and 29.80% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 44.70% are under the age of 18 and 29.10% are 65 or older.
