Buena, New Jersey

Buena is a borough located in Atlantic County, New Jersey. As of the 2000 census, the borough had a total population of 3,873.

Geography Buena is located at 39°31'25" North, 74°56'45" West (39.523475, -74.945736)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 19.7 km² (7.6 mi²). 19.7 km² (7.6 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 3,873 people, 1,454 households, and 978 families residing in the borough. The population density is 196.5/km² (509.1/mi²). There are 1,553 housing units at an average density of 78.8/km² (204.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the borough is 77.28% White, 7.64% African American, 0.52% Native American, 0.44% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 10.53% from other races, and 3.56% from two or more races. 23.65% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,454 households out of which 32.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.0% are married couples living together, 13.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.7% are non-families. 28.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.64 and the average family size is 3.23.

In the borough the population is spread out with 25.7% under the age of 18, 8.6% from 18 to 24, 30.1% from 25 to 44, 19.7% from 45 to 64, and 15.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 95.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.1 males.

The median income for a household in the borough is $35,679, and the median income for a family is $44,352. Males have a median income of $37,985 versus $23,788 for females. The per capita income for the borough is $16,717. 18.7% of the population and 11.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 28.1% are under the age of 18 and 14.1% are 65 or older.
