Buchanan County, Missouri

Buchanan County is a county located in the U.S. State of Missouri. As of 2000, the population is 85,998. Its county seat is St. Joseph6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,074 km² (415 mi²). 1,061 km² (410 mi²) of it is land and 13 km² (5 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.17% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 85,998 people, 33,557 households, and 21,912 families residing in the county. The population density is 81/km² (210/mi²). There are 36,574 housing units at an average density of 34/km² (89/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 92.73% White, 4.36% African American, 0.42% Native American, 0.45% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.65% from other races, and 1.37% from two or more races. 2.43% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 33,557 households out of which 30.60% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.30% are married couples living together, 12.00% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.70% are non-families. 28.90% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.50% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.42 and the average family size is 2.98.

In the county the population is spread out with 24.30% under the age of 18, 11.00% from 18 to 24, 28.50% from 25 to 44, 21.20% from 45 to 64, and 15.00% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 96.70 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.90 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $34,704, and the median income for a family is $42,408. Males have a median income of $31,697 versus $21,827 for females. The per capita income for the county is $17,882. 12.20% of the population and 8.50% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 15.00% are under the age of 18 and 9.60% are 65 or older.
