Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 6.4 km² (2.5 mi²). 6.2 km² (2.4 mi²) of it is land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.83% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 4,681 people, 1,915 households, and 1,191 families residing in the city. The population density is 753.1/km² (1,950.8/mi²). There are 2,098 housing units at an average density of 337.5/km² (874.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 86.26% White, 10.23% African American, 0.47% Native American, 0.51% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.60% from other races, and 1.92% from two or more races. 1.84% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,915 households out of which 30.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.5% are married couples living together, 13.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 37.8% are non-families. 32.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older.
