Brownfield is a city located in Terry County, Texas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 9,488. It is the county seat of Terry County6.

Geography Brownfield is located at 33°10'47" North, 102°16'15" West (33.179826, -102.270926)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 16.4 km² (6.3 mi²). 16.4 km² (6.3 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.32% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 9,488 people, 3,176 households, and 2,337 families residing in the city. The population density is 579.6/km² (1,501.0/mi²). There are 3,735 housing units at an average density of 228.2/km² (590.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 74.56% White, 6.59% African American, 0.42% Native American, 0.25% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 14.47% from other races, and 3.71% from two or more races. 45.95% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 3,176 households out of which 34.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.3% are married couples living together, 14.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.4% are non-families. 24.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.68 and the average family size is 3.19.

In the city the population is spread out with 27.2% under the age of 18, 9.8% from 18 to 24, 27.3% from 25 to 44, 20.0% from 45 to 64, and 15.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 109.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 111.6 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $26,504, and the median income for a family is $32,076. Males have a median income of $23,637 versus $19,628 for females. The per capita income for the city is $13,854. 26.0% of the population and 21.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 38.7% are under the age of 18 and 13.5% are 65 or older.
