Brown County, Indiana

Brown County is a county located in the U.S. State of Indiana. As of 2000, the population is 14,957. The county's county seat is Nashville, Indiana6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 820 km² (317 mi²). 809 km² (312 mi²) of it is land and 11 km² (4 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.38% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 14,957 people, 5,897 households, and 4,434 families residing in the county. The population density is 18/km² (48/mi²). There are 7,163 housing units at an average density of 9/km² (23/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 98.16% White, 0.21% African American, 0.22% Native American, 0.20% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.37% from other races, and 0.82% from two or more races. 0.88% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 5,897 households out of which 29.90% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 64.80% are married couples living together, 6.50% have a female householder with no husband present, and 24.80% are non-families. 20.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.51 and the average family size is 2.89.

In the county the population is spread out with 23.30% under the age of 18, 6.30% from 18 to 24, 27.90% from 25 to 44, 29.60% from 45 to 64, and 12.90% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 100.90 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 98.10 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $43,708, and the median income for a family is $49,252. Males have a median income of $36,828 versus $24,321 for females. The per capita income for the county is $20,548. 8.90% of the population and 7.70% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 9.10% are under the age of 18 and 10.10% are 65 or older.
