Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 10,938 people, 4,093 households, and 2,910 families residing in the town. The population density is 1,426.8/km² (3,701.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 92.15% White, 4.21% African American, 0.48% Native American, 1.50% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.58% from other races, and 1.05% from two or more races. 1.59% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 4,093 households out of which 30.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.2% are married couples living together, 15.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.9% are non-families. 22.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older.
