Bristol County, Rhode Island

Bristol County is a county located in the U.S. State of Rhode Island. As of 2000, the population is 50,648.

Geography The county has a total area of 116 km² (45 mi²). 64 km² (25 mi²) of it is land and 52 km² (20 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 44.80% water.

Demographics As of 2000, there are 50,648 people, 19,033 households, and 13,361 families residing in the county. The population density is 792/km² (2,052/mi²). There are 19,881 housing units at an average density of 311 persons/km² (805 persons/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 96.81% White, 0.69% African American, 0.16% Native American, 1.00% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.30% from other races, and 1.01% from two or more races. 1.13% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 19,033 households out of which 31.80% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.30% are married couples living together, 9.90% have a woman whose husband does not live with her, and 29.80% are non-families. 25.10% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.20% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.52 and the average family size is 3.04.

In the county, the population is spread out with 22.90% under the age of 18, 9.50% from 18 to 24, 27.40% from 25 to 44, 23.40% from 45 to 64, and 16.70% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 93.10 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.50 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $50,737, and the median income for a family is $63,114. Males have a median income of $41,902 versus $28,985 for females. The per capita income for the county is $26,503. 6.30% of the population and 4.40% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 6.20% are under the age of 18 and 9.60% are 65 or older.
