Briar Creek Township, Pennsylvania

Briar Creek Township is a township located in Columbia County, Pennsylvania. As of the 2000 census, the township had a total population of 3,061.

Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 54.9 km² (21.2 mi²). 54.6 km² (21.1 mi²) of it is land and 0.3 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.52% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 3,061 people, 1,225 households, and 911 families residing in the township. The population density is 56.1/km² (145.2/mi²). There are 1,351 housing units at an average density of 24.7/km² (64.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the township is 99.18% White, 0.20% African American, 0.03% Native American, 0.10% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.23% from other races, and 0.26% from two or more races. 0.39% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,225 households out of which 29.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.5% are married couples living together, 6.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.6% are non-families. 22.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.50 and the average family size is 2.92.

In the township the population is spread out with 22.4% under the age of 18, 6.4% from 18 to 24, 27.8% from 25 to 44, 28.5% from 45 to 64, and 14.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 95.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.4 males.

The median income for a household in the township is $37,743, and the median income for a family is $41,185. Males have a median income of $27,647 versus $19,032 for females. The per capita income for the township is $17,818. 10.3% of the population and 8.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 17.5% are under the age of 18 and 7.3% are 65 or older.
