Brenham, Texas

Brenham is a city located in Washington County, Texas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 13,507. It is the county seat of Washington County6.

Geography Brenham is located at 30°9'43" North, 96°23'49" West (30.161901, -96.397004)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 22.7 km² (8.8 mi²). 22.7 km² (8.8 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 13,507 people, 4,907 households, and 3,115 families residing in the city. The population density is 595.3/km² (1,541.5/mi²). There are 5,317 housing units at an average density of 234.3/km² (606.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 69.99% White, 21.91% African American, 0.25% Native American, 1.86% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 4.75% from other races, and 1.22% from two or more races. 10.25% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 4,907 households out of which 30.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.7% are married couples living together, 14.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 36.5% are non-families. 30.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.40 and the average family size is 3.01.

In the city the population is spread out with 22.5% under the age of 18, 15.9% from 18 to 24, 24.7% from 25 to 44, 18.8% from 45 to 64, and 18.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 89.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 86.6 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $32,198, and the median income for a family is $41,486. Males have a median income of $31,133 versus $22,152 for females. The per capita income for the city is $15,351. 17.7% of the population and 12.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 21.9% are under the age of 18 and 20.7% are 65 or older.
