Branch County, Michigan

Branch County is a county located in the U.S. State of Michigan. As of 2000, the population is 45,787. Its county seat is Coldwater6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,345 km² (519 mi²). 1,314 km² (507 mi²) of it is land and 31 km² (12 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.33% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 45,787 people, 16,349 households, and 11,575 families residing in the county. The population density is 35/km² (90/mi²). There are 19,822 housing units at an average density of 15/km² (39/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 93.37% White, 2.63% African American, 0.47% Native American, 0.42% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 1.39% from other races, and 1.69% from two or more races. 2.98% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 16,349 households out of which 33.20% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.00% are married couples living together, 9.90% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.20% are non-families. 24.20% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.61 and the average family size is 3.08.

In the county the population is spread out with 25.50% under the age of 18, 8.40% from 18 to 24, 29.80% from 25 to 44, 23.10% from 45 to 64, and 13.10% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 102.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 101.00 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $38,760, and the median income for a family is $44,777. Males have a median income of $32,098 versus $22,579 for females. The per capita income for the county is $17,552. 9.30% of the population and 6.00% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 12.70% are under the age of 18 and 7.20% are 65 or older.
