Bracken County, Kentucky

Bracken County is a county located in the U.S. State of Kentucky. As of 2000, the population is 8,279. Its county seat is Brooksville, Kentucky6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 541 km² (209 mi²). 526 km² (203 mi²) of it is land and 15 km² (6 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.71% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 8,279 people, 3,228 households, and 2,346 families residing in the county. The population density is 16/km² (41/mi²). There are 3,715 housing units at an average density of 7/km² (18/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 98.48% White, 0.62% African American, 0.25% Native American, 0.06% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.21% from other races, and 0.35% from two or more races. 0.47% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 3,228 households out of which 33.50% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.30% are married couples living together, 10.70% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.30% are non-families. 23.90% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.55 and the average family size is 3.00.

In the county the population is spread out with 25.50% under the age of 18, 8.40% from 18 to 24, 29.50% from 25 to 44, 23.00% from 45 to 64, and 13.50% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 98.00 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.90 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $34,823, and the median income for a family is $40,469. Males have a median income of $31,503 versus $21,139 for females. The per capita income for the county is $16,478. 10.80% of the population and 7.60% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 10.50% are under the age of 18 and 17.30% are 65 or older.
