Boyd County is a county located in the U.S. State of Kentucky. As of 2000, the population is 49,752. Its county seat is Catlettsburg, Kentucky6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 419 km² (162 mi²). 415 km² (160 mi²) of it is land and 4 km² (2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.02% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 49,752 people, 20,010 households, and 14,107 families residing in the county. The population density is 120/km² (311/mi²). There are 21,976 housing units at an average density of 53/km² (137/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 95.97% White, 2.55% African American, 0.16% Native American, 0.30% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.14% from other races, and 0.88% from two or more races. 1.12% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 20,010 households out of which 28.90% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.70% are married couples living together, 11.60% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.50% are non-families. 26.50% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.20% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.38 and the average family size is 2.86.

In the county the population is spread out with 21.80% under the age of 18, 8.30% from 18 to 24, 28.70% from 25 to 44, 25.60% from 45 to 64, and 15.60% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 96.00 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.10 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $32,749, and the median income for a family is $41,125. Males have a median income of $35,728 versus $22,591 for females. The per capita income for the county is $18,212. 15.50% of the population and 11.50% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 22.40% are under the age of 18 and 12.10% are 65 or older.
