Box Elder is a city located in South Dakota. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 2,841.

Geography Box Elder is located at 44°6'55" North, 103°4'55" West (44.115349, -103.081997)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 15.0 km² (5.8 mi²). None of the area is covered with water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 2,841 people, 993 households, and 750 families residing in the city. The population density is 189.1/km² (489.6/mi²). There are 1,072 housing units at an average density of 71.4/km² (184.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 83.42% White, 2.29% African American, 5.60% Native American, 2.08% Asian, 0.11% Pacific Islander, 0.70% from other races, and 5.81% from two or more races. 3.56% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 993 households out of which 48.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.4% are married couples living together, 19.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 24.4% are non-families. 17.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 1.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.86 and the average family size is 3.20.

In the city the population is spread out with 34.6% under the age of 18, 13.1% from 18 to 24, 30.9% from 25 to 44, 18.2% from 45 to 64, and 3.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 26 years. For every 100 females there are 98.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.7 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $32,344, and the median income for a family is $35,020. Males have a median income of $24,596 versus $17,313 for females. The per capita income for the city is $12,692. 15.9% of the population and 13.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 21.3% are under the age of 18 and 6.9% are 65 or older.
