Bowstring Lake, Minnesota

Bowstring Lake is an unorganized territory located in Itasca County, Minnesota. As of the 2000 census, the unorganized territory had a total population of 1,203.

Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the unorganized territory has a total area of 735.9 km² (284.1 mi²). 557.8 km² (215.4 mi²) of it is land and 178.2 km² (68.8 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 24.21% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 1,203 people, 378 households, and 286 families residing in the unorganized territory. The population density is 2.2/km² (5.6/mi²). There are 635 housing units at an average density of 1.1/km² (2.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the unorganized territory is 36.66% White, 0.17% African American, 61.35% Native American, 0.17% Asian, 0.25% Pacific Islander, 0.08% from other races, and 1.33% from two or more races. 2.16% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 378 households out of which 42.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.9% are married couples living together, 19.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 24.3% are non-families. 19.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.18 and the average family size is 3.63.

In the unorganized territory the population is spread out with 37.2% under the age of 18, 8.9% from 18 to 24, 24.0% from 25 to 44, 19.3% from 45 to 64, and 10.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 30 years. For every 100 females there are 106.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 104.1 males.

The median income for a household in the unorganized territory is $24,191, and the median income for a family is $27,019. Males have a median income of $24,904 versus $27,708 for females. The per capita income for the unorganized territory is $10,248. 21.2% of the population and 20.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 26.0% are under the age of 18 and 17.6% are 65 or older.
