Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 5,696 people, 2,060 households, and 1,413 families residing in the city. The population density is 125.9/km² (326.0/mi²). There are 2,251 housing units at an average density of 49.7/km² (128.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 38.34% White, 59.97% African American, 0.19% Native American, 0.32% Asian, 0.12% Pacific Islander, 0.40% from other races, and 0.65% from two or more races. 1.54% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,060 households out of which 34.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 35.5% are married couples living together, 29.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.4% are non-families. 28.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older.
