Big Sandy is a town located in Chouteau County, Montana. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 703.

Geography Big Sandy is located at 48°10'40" North, 110°6'53" West (48.177872, -110.114630)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.1 km² (0.4 mi²). 1.1 km² (0.4 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 703 people, 296 households, and 179 families residing in the town. The population density is 616.9/km² (1,588.1/mi²). There are 371 housing units at an average density of 325.6/km² (838.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 95.31% White, 0.00% African American, 2.84% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.14% Pacific Islander, 0.57% from other races, and 1.14% from two or more races. 0.71% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 296 households out of which 24.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.7% are married couples living together, 8.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 39.2% are non-families. 36.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 19.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.18 and the average family size is 2.83.

In the town the population is spread out with 21.6% under the age of 18, 5.8% from 18 to 24, 16.8% from 25 to 44, 28.7% from 45 to 64, and 27.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 48 years. For every 100 females there are 90.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 88.1 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $28,523, and the median income for a family is $35,417. Males have a median income of $23,000 versus $17,917 for females. The per capita income for the town is $14,801. 14.1% of the population and 10.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 19.7% are under the age of 18 and 11.0% are 65 or older.
