Bibb County, Georgia

Bibb County is a county located in the U.S. State of Georgia. As of 2000, the population is 153,887. The county's county seat is Macon, Georgia6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 661 km² (255 mi²). 647 km² (250 mi²) of it is land and 13 km² (5 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.03% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 153,887 people, 59,667 households, and 39,797 families residing in the county. The population density is 238/km² (616/mi²). There are 67,194 housing units at an average density of 104/km² (269/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 50.13% White, 47.32% African American, 0.18% Native American, 1.08% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.46% from other races, and 0.81% from two or more races. 1.31% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 59,667 households out of which 31.90% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 42.30% are married couples living together, 20.60% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.30% are non-families. 28.20% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.80% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.49 and the average family size is 3.06.

In the county the population is spread out with 26.60% under the age of 18, 10.10% from 18 to 24, 29.00% from 25 to 44, 21.70% from 45 to 64, and 12.70% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 85.20 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 80.20 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $34,532, and the median income for a family is $43,479. Males have a median income of $34,263 versus $25,540 for females. The per capita income for the county is $19,058. 19.10% of the population and 15.50% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 28.20% are under the age of 18 and 13.10% are 65 or older.
