Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 1,681 people, 651 households, and 449 families residing in the town. The population density is 618.1/km² (1,606.8/mi²). There are 710 housing units at an average density of 261.1/km² (678.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 40.15% White, 58.12% African American, 0.18% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.12% Pacific Islander, 0.71% from other races, and 0.71% from two or more races. 0.77% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 651 households out of which 28.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.9% are married couples living together, 22.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.9% are non-families. 28.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older.
