Bethel, Connecticut

Bethel is a town located in Fairfield County, Connecticut. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 18,067.

Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 43.7 km² (16.9 mi²). 43.5 km² (16.8 mi²) of it is land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.53% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 18,067 people, 6,505 households, and 4,846 families residing in the town. The population density is 415.5/km² (1,075.7/mi²). There are 6,653 housing units at an average density of 153.0 persons/km² (396.1 persons/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 92.39% White, 1.26% African American, 0.15% Native American, 3.55% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 1.09% from other races, and 1.52% from two or more races. 3.70% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 6,505 households out of which 38.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.4% are married couples living together, 9.0% have a woman whose husband does not live with her, and 25.5% are non-families. 20.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.76 and the average family size is 3.23.

In the town the population is spread out with 27.3% under the age of 18, 6.0% from 18 to 24, 31.9% from 25 to 44, 24.6% from 45 to 64, and 10.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 95.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.1 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $68,891, and the median income for a family is $78,358. Males have a median income of $51,816 versus $36,544 for females. The per capita income for the town is $28,927. 2.5% of the population and 1.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 1.3% are under the age of 18 and 5.5% are 65 or older.

The racial makeup of the town is 89.96% White, 1.61% African American, 0.13% Native American, 4.40% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 1.67% from other races, and 2.20% from two or more races. 4.63% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 3,639 households out of which 33.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.7% are married couples living together, 11.5% have a woman whose husband does not live with her, and 35.2% are non-families. 28.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.51 and the average family size is 3.14.

In the town the population is spread out with 25.9% under the age of 18, 6.5% from 18 to 24, 35.1% from 25 to 44, 21.7% from 45 to 64, and 10.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 91.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 88.3 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $57,276, and the median income for a family is $66,672. Males have a median income of $45,815 versus $35,989 for females. The per capita income for the town is $25,888. 3.0% of the population and 1.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 0.7% are under the age of 18 and 6.6% are 65 or older.
