Bern Township, Pennsylvania

Bern Township is a township located in Berks County, Pennsylvania. As of the 2000 census, the township had a total population of 6,758.

Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 51.7 km² (20.0 mi²). 49.6 km² (19.1 mi²) of it is land and 2.1 km² (0.8 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 4.06% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 6,758 people, 1,903 households, and 1,484 families residing in the township. The population density is 136.3/km² (352.8/mi²). There are 1,964 housing units at an average density of 39.6/km² (102.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the township is 92.56% White, 4.66% African American, 0.09% Native American, 1.44% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.34% from other races, and 0.92% from two or more races. 8.24% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,903 households out of which 27.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 70.3% are married couples living together, 5.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 22.0% are non-families. 17.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.55 and the average family size is 2.89.

In the township the population is spread out with 16.6% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 29.4% from 25 to 44, 25.1% from 45 to 64, and 20.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 122.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 120.8 males.

The median income for a household in the township is $61,222, and the median income for a family is $68,636. Males have a median income of $46,731 versus $26,694 for females. The per capita income for the township is $25,969. 2.2% of the population and 1.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 0.0% are under the age of 18 and 8.0% are 65 or older.
