Belmont, New York

Belmont is a village within the town of Amity which is located in the center of Allegany County, New York. It is the county seat of Allegany County. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 952.

Geography Belmont is located at 42°13'33" North, 78°1'55" West (42.225717, -78.031927)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 2.6 km² (1.0 mi²). 2.6 km² (1.0 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 952 people, 392 households, and 241 families residing in the village. The population density is 367.6/km² (952.9/mi²). There are 449 housing units at an average density of 173.4/km² (449.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 96.11% White, 0.95% African American, 0.11% Native American, 0.11% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.21% from other races, and 2.52% from two or more races. 1.05% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 392 households out of which 30.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.9% are married couples living together, 11.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 38.5% are non-families. 33.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 18.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.31 and the average family size is 2.98.

In the village the population is spread out with 25.3% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 28.5% from 25 to 44, 22.0% from 45 to 64, and 16.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 104.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 98.1 males.

The median income for a household in the village is $29,545, and the median income for a family is $35,625. Males have a median income of $28,365 versus $20,781 for females. The per capita income for the village is $14,149. 12.7% of the population and 9.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 13.8% are under the age of 18 and 6.1% are 65 or older.
