According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 4.4 km² (1.7 mi²). 2.6 km² (1.0 mi²) of it is land and 1.7 km² (0.7 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 39.65% water.
Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 6,045 people, 2,946 households, and 1,316 families residing in the borough. The population density is 2,288.2/km² (5,921.7/mi²). There are 3,996 housing units at an average density of 1,512.6/km² (3,914.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the borough is 91.53% White, 3.46% African American, 0.18% Native American, 1.03% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 1.99% from other races, and 1.82% from two or more races. 6.85% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 2,946 households out of which 17.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 32.0% are married couples living together, 9.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 55.3% are non-families. 44.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.05 and the average family size is 2.92.
